^{Interview d'un musicien unique : Boubacar Traoré qui sortira son prochain album 'Dounia Tabolo" (sur Lusafrica) le 17 Novembre 2017 avec notamment, Corey Harris. Rencontre :} 

#1 Bonjour Boubacar et merci pour cet interview. 2 questions en une pour commencer : Pourquoi te surnommes t'on "Kar Kar" et du coup y a t'il un lien avec le morceau "Kar Kar" ? 

Quand j’étais jeune, j’ai commencé par le football, puis après j’ai eu une blessure à la jambe, j’ai continué avec la musique.

Le surnom Kar Kar vient de cette époque où je jouais au foot: j’étais un très bon joueur. Kar Kar  veut dire "celui qui sait dribler". Ensuite comme je jouais de la guitare comme d’une kora, cela étonnait les gens, ils ont continué à m’appeler Kar Kar ! Pour eux je driblais avec les cordes de la guitare, comme avec le ballon, quand je jouais au foot.

#2 "Mariama" est l'un de tes morceaux les plus poignants. Que raconte t'il ?

C’est une histoire du Khasso, la région de Kayes au Mali, ma région. 

Mariama était une jeune fille qui était très belle, aimée de tous. 

Un oiseau a deviné que la maman de Mariama allait mourir d’une maladie, alors il a chanté, et une vieille femme a entendu ce que l’oiseau a dit – le lendemain la mère est décédée, alors la vieille femme est partie chercher Mariama qui était allée à la rivière. Elle lui a chanté cette chanson : "Mariama, viens, quelque chose de triste est arrivé. Il faut que tu viennes voir." L’histoire de Mariama a d’abord été chantée par l’oiseau, mais après, tout le monde l’a chantée à Mariama…

#3 Ton actualité c'est cet album à venir "Dounia Tabolo" (Lusafrica), à quoi ton public peut-ils s'attendre musicalement parlant ?

Voilà, j’ai enregistré ce disque à Lafayette aux USA, avec des musiciens américains que je connais depuis longtemps, que j’avais rencontré dans mes tournées aux USA et au Canada, il y a 10 ou 15 ans. J'avais envie de jouer avec eux depuis longtemps.

#4 Globalement et ce nouvel album ne fera pas exception, ta musique est grandement empreint de Blues. Il y a définitivement un pont entre le Mali et le Mississippi...  ?

Le blues est notre musique, elle est très ancienne. Avant, au Mali, quand on jouait ce style de musique on n’appelait pas ça le blues. Mais cette musique s’est appelé le blues quand elle a été jouée par des américains d’origine africaine, entre la Nouvelle Orléans et Chicago, il y a des années, bien avant  le siècle dernier. Mais c’est la même musique. Si c’est joué par des Français, ou des Anglais, ou de n'importe quelle nationalité, chacun va mettre un peu de lui-même. Mais finalement c’est la même musique. C’est pour cela que c’est facile pour moi de jouer avec des musiciens américains. Ils n'ont pas eu la même histoire que moi, mais l'âme du blues est la même pour tous.

#5 Tu peux nous parler des musiciens et invités sur cet album ? 

Cedric Watson et Corey Harris, je les est rencontré au Festival de Toronto, il y a une quinzaine d’années. Cedric joue du washboard, du violon, un peu de tout. C’est un vrai cajun. Corey est un très bon guitariste. Il chante la chanson "Ben de Kadi" avec moi sur l’album. Il y a aussi Leyla McCalla. Je voulais un violoncelle pour faire une nouvelle version de "Je Chanterai pour toi". C’est Corey Haris qui me l’a présentée. La chanson est très jolie avec elle.

#1 Hello Boubacar and thank you for this interview. 2 questions in one to start: Why do you call us "Kar Kar" and suddenly there is a link with the track "Kar Kar"?

When I was young, I started with football, then after I had a leg injury, I continued with the music.

The nickname Kar Kar comes from that time when I played football: I was a very good player. Kar Kar means "the one who knows how to dribble". Then as I played the guitar as a kora, it surprised people, they continued to call me Kar Kar! For them I dribbled with the strings of the guitar, as with the ball, when I played football.

#2 "Mariama", is one of the most poignant song. What does he tell?

It's a story of Khasso, the region of Kayes in Mali, my region. Mariama was a girl who was very beautiful, loved by all.

A bird guessed that Mariama's mother was going to die of an illness, so he sang, and an old woman heard what the bird said - the next day the mother died, so the old woman went to get Mariama who had gone to the river. She sang this song to her: "Mariama, come on, something sad has happened, you have to come and see." The story of Mariama was first sung by the bird, but after, everyone sang it in Mariama ...

#3 Your news is this upcoming album "Dounia Tabolo" (Lusafrica), what can your audience expect musically speaking?

So, I recorded this album in Lafayette, USA, with American musicians I have known for a long time, whom I met during my tours in the US and Canada 10 or 15 years ago. I wanted to play with them for a long time.

#4 Overall and this new album will be no exception, your music is heavily blues. Is there definitely a bridge between Mali and Mississippi... ?

Blues is our music, is very old. Before, in Mali, when we played this style of music we did not call it the blues. But this music was called blues when it was played by African Americans, between New Orleans and Chicago, years ago, well before the last century. But it's the same music. If it's played by French, or English, or any nationality, everyone will put a little of himself. But finally it's the same music. That's why it's easy for me to play with American musicians. They did not have the same story as me, but the soul of the blues is the same for everyone.

#5 Can you tell us about the musicians and guests on this album?

Cedric Watson and Corey Harris, I met them at the Toronto Film Festival some fifteen years ago. Cedric plays washboard, violin, a little bit of everything. It's a real Cajun. Corey is a very good guitarist. He sings the song "Ben de Kadi" with me on the album. There is also Leyla McCalla. I wanted a cello to make a new version of "I will sing for you". It was Corey Haris who introduced it to me. The song is very pretty with her.
